How do the armed forces of the United States use social media?

Who is most successful and why?

How can people communicate with our men and women in the military using social media?

During this course, we will break down how the U.S. military uses social media by channel, what trends are noticeable, and what kinds of communications are most successful or most engaging.

We also will interview some social media and public affairs managers in the U.S. military to get their perspectives on how their social media channels have grown, what obstacles they have faced to growth, and what opportunities they are looking to explore in the months and years ahead.

Lessons

  1. Over the last few years, the U.S. military has become more active on social media. Since Social Web Tactics first reported on how the U.S. military was using Instagram in November of 2016, the total Instagram audience for all military branches has increased by 2.5 million to 5.2 million - a 92% increase in 2 years. In this lesson, we will discuss: How do the armed forces of the United States use Instagram? Who is most successful and why? How can people communicate with our men and women in the military on this social channel?
  2. Over the last few years, the U.S. military has become more active on social media, especially in its use of video channels such as YouTube. In this lesson, we will discuss: How do the armed forces of the United States use video and video channels like YouTube? Who is most successful and why? How can businesses and citizens best use and/or engage with the military through their video channels?
  3. Over the last few years, the U.S. military has become more active on social media. Despite some recent challenges and declining use, Facebook remains the largest social network in the world. In this lesson, we will discuss: How do the armed forces of the United States use Facebook for public engagement? Who is most successful and why? How can businesses and citizens best use and/or engage with the military through Facebook?
  4. Over the last few years, the U.S. military has become more active on social media. In this lesson, we will review the data and topics discussed to date, and analyze: How do the armed forces of the United States use other social media channels not previously discussed? What do social media managers and public affairs officers who use social media for the military think? This lesson will include additional speakers and discussion.
